Meet Joy Golden: The real Peggy Olsen

December 15th, 2009

Meet Joy Golden: The Real Peggy Olsen

“They call me, you know, a legend,” said Joy Golden. We were at the Selling the Sixties screening and I had just asked her if she was the real Peggy Olsen. She is, in fact, one of them.

Golden is 79 — “I say 80 because it’s more impressive” — and worked as a copywriter on Madison Avenue until the eighties, when she started her own radio advertising company, Joy Radio. It was exclusively focused on humorous radio, “because I’m funny.” Here she is doing an AMC promo for Mad Men, part of a series of Madison Avenue legends. She admits to “hanking and panking — but it was always elegant.”

What was it like to be among the first generation of women in advertising? “At the time I didn’t think about it. I really didn’t,” she said. “I was just happy to get a job right out of college. I didn’t think about the social aspects of it.” As she rose through the ranks, Golden learned how to assert herself. “By the time you go to be a copywriter you were no longer in the secretarial pool. I learned not to be a pushover, just like Peggy in the series.”

In Selling The Sixties, in a segment originally taped for Mad Men DVD extras (above), Golden talks more about on what life was like for a woman in advertising back then. “You just had to kind of keep away from the guys, at least I did. I was cute in those days so they used to knock on my cubicle, so to speak. ‘You wanna have lunch?’ ‘No.’” (Bonus: legendary journalist Gay Talese says there were no attractive women at The New York Timesat the time because they were all in advertising.) Overall, she was thrilled by the work itself and the excitement around it.

But it didn’t last. “Things changed,” Golden told me. “What happened is, it became technological creative rather than creative creative… so we all kind of lost our hearts.”

Right around them, George Lois came by to chat. Earlier, he had explained that he had been getting dozens of emails telling him he was right about Vogue. Golden complained that he and Gay Talese had been cut off from their Esquire reminiscences in the panel earlier that night.

“I was kind of getting to a punchline, wherever I was,” Lois said. “I’m always about to get to a punchline.”

“That’s the story of life,” said Golden. As Lois left, she said coquettishly, “Do you kiss old ladies?”

“Of course I do,” he said, leaning in affectionately. “I kiss old ladies who are eighty but look like they’re sixty.” He left, promising to do a Jezebel interview.

A few minutes later, Golden turned to me. By way of goodbye, she said, “You have my permission to make me famous again.”

All Things Theatrical

November 30th, 2009

As you know here at Off Broadway, we are big fans of all things theatrical. Here are some of the latest write ups from recent shows -

Dreamgirls – The Story of Diana Ross and The Supremes

Currently showing at the Apollo is the smash hit ‘Dreamgirls’, which has been adapted for the stage after a successful stint in the Box Office. Lynn Dell went to check it out and see what all the fuss was about! With almost 40 costume changes this surely was a feast for the eyes – whoever designed the costumes should have won an Academy Award! The set design and the lighting especially, was beyond the beyond! Of course we are not forgetting the show stopping performances by Moya Angela as Effie White, also featuring, as The Dreams, Syesha Mercado as Deena Jones, and Adrienne Warren as Lorrell Robinson.

Find out more here http://www.apollotheater.org/dreamgirls.htm

Dreamgirls is showing with LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH December 12, 2009
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, at 8 PM
Wednesday & Saturday at 2 PM & 8 PM
Sunday at 3 PM

Ragtime - The Story is ours. The place is America. The time is Ragtime.

Last week, Lynn Dell, went to see the Broadway Musical ‘Ragtime’ and said the opening scene literally “knocked me out! This ALONE is worth paying to go and see!!” Here in New York times change, but struggles remain the same as they did 100 years ago.  Read below for more information on this fantastic show!

Synopsis – AT THE DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY, everything is changing… and anything is possible. Direct from a sold-out extended run at the Kennedy Center, RAGTIME THE MUSICAL returns to Broadway in an acclaimed new production as ravishing as it is relevant. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, RAGTIME weaves together three distinctly American tales — that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician — united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Their compelling stories are set to a glorious, Tony Award®-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Based on the classic E. L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME also features an extraordinary, Tony Award-winning book by Terrence McNally, direction and choreography by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, a majestic 28-piece orchestra and a vibrant cast of 40.

Cabaret Night with “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

September 17th, 2009

Last night our guests were treated to a fantastic musical extravaganza!!

Owner Lynn Dell, invited the talented cast of the new musical production of “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to perform for us here at the store. And it was marvelous!!

The cast presented a selection of songs from ‘Joseph’ as well as other Broadway Musical favorites (See the song title’s list below). We all watched, enthralled and delighted by the stunning high energy performances!

Song Titles – ‘Joseph Medly’, ‘I would never leave you’, ‘Song of the king’, ‘All I need is the girl’, ‘Those canon days’, ‘Close every door’, ‘It might as well be Spring’, ‘Mack the knife’, ‘I enjoy being a girl’, ‘On the street where you live’, ‘Benjamin Calypso’, ‘This is the moment’ and ‘Any Dream will do’.

Our own Brianna (aka, vintage glamour puss), who is currently performing in the ‘Joseph’ production, organized props from the store to use during the performance. We saw clothes flying around, umbrellas twirling and a limbo pole erected!! (That was for ‘Benjamin’s Calypso’!)

The ten talented cast members (listed below) were so brilliant, they simply dazzled us with their delicious renditions!

Stars of the show –

Christopher Bradshaw – Musical Director

Miguel Angel Sierra – as Joseph

Nadine Jacques – Narrator

Laura Flanagan – Narrator

Paul Campione – as the Pharaoh

Cover-Lovin: Lara Stone Goes Brunette for Vogue Paris September ‘09

August 24th, 2009

I’ve already reviewed a mag cover with Lara Stone, but I couldn’t help but be drawn to her drastically different look for Vogue Paris’ September cover – namely, her hair!

lara stone brunette vogue paris sept 09

Lara is best known for her ethereal blonde-fairy look, but this shoot shows a compeltely new side of her – the overall styling of the shoot is very 50’s,  very retro, which I adore, and Lara’s new look givers her a smoky air of mystery that suits her extremely well.

I love it.  Stay burnette, Lara!

What do you think?  Love it?  Want Lara to go back to blonde?  Let me know in the comments!
